To put forensic science in simply layman's terms: it is the application of scientific procedures in conjunction with the law.Forensic science is the umbrella term for a collection of scientific procedures that can be employed when it comes to providing evidence that a crime has been committed and also provides ways and means of proving how a crime has been committed.

In its simplest form it can be a means by which fingerprints, fibres, DNA and bodily fluids can be collected and stored - without contamination - so that they can be later used as evidence in a police investigation into a specific crime - or indeed series of crimes.

Types of Forensic Science Forensic science breaks down into the categories of:

Each of these categories will at some time or other be employed in a criminal investigation and can also be used in commercial matters such as insurance investigations, allegations of fraud and/or corruption, and proving the paternity of an individual in an ongoing investigation relating to child welfare.

Forensic Science Ireland is an associated office of the Department of Justice and Equality. The people working at FSI are mainly trained scientists and analysts supported by administration staff and number close to one hundred. We work together to deliver to best international standards, independent expert opinion, advice, training and research to support the Irish Criminal Justice system.

Originally known as the Forensic Science Laboratory, FSI was established in 1975 to provide a scientific service to the Criminal Justice System by analysing samples submitted from crime scenes and providing expert evidence in criminal trials. Forty years later some of the original staff are now leading today’s FSI team as we embrace the ever increasing advances in forensic science and continue to fulfil that remit.

Forensic science is the application of science to criminal and civil laws , mainly—on the criminal side—during criminal investigation , as governed by the legal standards of admissible evidence and criminal procedure .

Forensic scientists collect, preserve, and analyze scientific evidence during the course of an investigation. While some forensic scientists travel to the scene of the crime to collect the evidence themselves, others occupy a laboratory role, performing analysis on objects brought to them by other individuals. [1]

The ancient world lacked standardized forensic practices, which aided criminals in escaping punishment. Criminal investigations and trials heavily relied on forced confessions and witness testimony . However, ancient sources do contain several accounts of techniques that foreshadow concepts in forensic science that were developed centuries later. [4]
