Oscar Wilde’s society comedy Lady Windermere’s Fan comes to Vaudeville Theatre as part of a year-long celebration of the playwright’s life and works. The season is the first venture for Classic Spring. Dominic Dromgoole, the former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, leads the new theatre company.

London’s St James Theatre first staged Lady Windermere’s Fan in 1892. It is the first comic play that Wilde wrote. However, it captures what many now best enjoy about his distinctive works.

It is Lady Windermere’s birthday and she is hosting a ball to celebrate the occasion. All runs smoothly until Lady Windermere hears rumours that her husband is having an affair. She confronts him, yet still he invites the other woman to the ball. Enraged, Lady Windermere takes matters into her own hands, only for a surprise revelation emerge.

LADY WINDERMERE . How do you do, Lord Darlington? No, I can’t shake hands with you. My hands are all wet with these roses. Aren’t they lovely? They came up from Selby this morning.

LORD DARLINGTON . They are quite perfect. [Sees a fan lying on the table.] And what a wonderful fan! May I look at it?

LADY WINDERMERE . Do. Pretty, isn’t it! It’s got my name on it, and everything. I have only just seen it myself. It’s my husband’s birthday present to me. You know to-day is my birthday?
