Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a wealthy, unmarried woman who inherited Shibden Hall in West Yorkshire from her uncle in 1826. [1] Throughout her life, she kept diaries which chronicled the details of her everyday life, including her lesbian relationships, her financial concerns, her industrial activities and her work improving Shibden Hall. [1] The diaries contain more than 4,000,000 words and about a sixth of them (those concerning the intimate details of her romantic and sexual relationships) were written in code. [1] The code, derived from a combination of algebra and Ancient Greek , was deciphered in the 1930s. [2] [3]

Anne attends a party with her acquaintances, including Rawson and the Lawtons. Mariana sees Anne wearing her wedding ring clearly on show and is unhappy with Anne drawing attention to herself. Anne complains that Charles Lawton is not as unhealthy as Mariana had led her to believe. Rawson sees the two women talking together and has a conversation of his own with Lawton. When Mariana returns to her husband's side, he looks dazed and asks her how Anne loves her. After the party, Mariana writes to Anne and tells her that her husband is suspicious. She tells Anne not to write to her anymore.

Anne's uncle dies and she inherits his wealth. She writes to Mariana, asking her to come to live with her at once. Mariana replies that she will be travelling nearby in a month's time and that they will discuss what to do then. When the time comes, Anne meets Mariana's coach coming along the road and excitedly gets in. Mariana is angry at her drawing attention to herself. She tells Anne that she would rather die than have people know about their relationship. She says that they could be happy together, but would have to live apart. Anne tells her that she wants to spend her life with someone, and leaves.

Seeing how A Nightmare on Elm Street celebrates its 30th birthday in November, we’ll surely see tons of tribute/retrospective pieces about the film and its glove-wearing protagonist hit the web. Well, we’re joining the party a little early with this post, but we’re also taking it in a different direction. Instead of discussing the impact of Wes Craven’s franchise or anything like that, this article takes a more playful look at how Freddy Krueger has progressed over the years. No, not in terms of his appearances in his own films, but the ways that he’s been spoofed, parodied, and transformed through video games, another type of film, and comedy.

Like any movie franchise worth its weight in merchandising money, A Nightmare on Elm Street was transported to the realm of video games to rake in more cash off Freddy’s back. As it turns out, though, gamers who played the Nintendo Entertainment System title weren’t actually getting the real experience. The original version apparently allowed you to control Freddy, who is tasked with killing children (of course) as they attempt to scatter his bones around town. However, this concept didn’t fly, and it was scrapped in favor of a game where you control the kids trying to get rid of Freddy.

In addition to this game, there’s a “forgotten” Freddy game out there that was only released on PC and Commodore 64. If you want to know more about it, head over to I-Mockery for a full rundown. But’s not all for Freddy and gamers. The sweater-loving murderer also makes an appearance in the Mortal Kombat franchise reboot from 2011. He’s a fully playable character and you can get a preview of what he brings to the game here .

You can see our other Nightmare on Elm Street lists here , and you can see our other Friday the 13th lists here .   Today, it’s time for  Freddy Vs. Jason (2003 ), aka, the bastard child of a thousand re-writes

I saw Freddy Vs. Jason  at a sold-out, opening night screening which felt more like a sporting event than a movie. Large portions of the raucous crowd regularly erupted into competing chants (“Freddy, Freddy, Freddy!” vs. “Jason, Jason, Jason!”) and regularly talked back to the screen. It’s one of my most cherished filmgoing memories. Such a shame, then, that Freddy Vs. Jason isn’t really worthy of such a response.

But it could have been a lot worse, especially considering how long it took to finally happen and the truly crazy directions it almost went along the way.  In fact, Freddy Vs. Jason ‘s development is one of Hollywood’s most infamous cases of development hell.
