The free-wheel is also a safety feature when driving on slippery roads. A third advantage is that changing down is possible without declutching. In other words, a sort of semi.-automatic feature. lf you prefer to drive without the free-wheel it is just a matter of pulling out a control and the engine will again act as a conventional over-run brake.
